Finance for Startups

My favorite finance & startup-related resources to help you scale.

Resources

I often get asked about what tools, trainings, and services I recommend...

Some of the links below are affiliate links, but I've only included products and services that I use myself and love.

I've also included many tools which are free (or have free versions), which I've highlighted.

Fractional CFO Support

  • Need help with your financial model? I have a few different fractional CFOs who I have worked with and can personally recommend who have a range of rates and backgrounds.

  • Reach out to me at eric@ericandrewsstartups.com and I will put you in touch with the right person.

Productivity software:

  • Notion: (personal account is free)

    • This killed Google docs for me. All-in-one productivity tool that combines note-taking, document sharing, project management, and wikis. Over 50% of YC-backed startups run their businesses on Notion.
    • I use Notion to keep track of the status of everything I’m working on. It allows me to have one centralized place to store everything in a linked and searchable way, communicate with team members, track the status of all tasks, set future reminders, share documents, and keep all projects moving forward.

Tech/startup books:

  • The Cold Start Problem: How to Start and Scale Network Effects
    • This is the single most important resource on this list. Deep explanations/case studies about how networked businesses scale. Written by Andrew Chen (GP at Andreessen Horowitz).
  • The Startup J Curve
    • Lays out the six stages of startup growth, the challenges in each stage, and how to overcome them. Fantastic read.
  • Zero to One
    • Peter Thiel’s incredible book about how innovation & disruption work.

Crowdfunding

  • I usually recommend WeFunder (and also do small angel investments myself) as they are the biggest crowdfunding platform and help startups raise more money than any where else. Use my link here to save up to $10,000 on your Reg CF raise.

Non-dilutive financing options:

  • CapChase
    • They offer SaaS recurring revenue financing, which is a form of non-dilutive financing for SaaS.
    • I've got a contact at CapChase and can make an intro and get you a discount. Reach out to me at [email protected] and I will put you in touch.

Favorite email newsletter:

  • Axios Pro Rata
    • I read this free newsletter to keep track of the most important deals that happened over the last 24 hours across venture, private equity, and public markets.

Startup legal advice:

Thomas Dorwart - the lawyer featured in the Q&A live streams of this program. He is also available for hire if you contact him directly.
